Cultivated by their mothers, the love bestowed inside Harry and Gilgamesh shelters them from harm and gives them the power to defeat evil. As portrayed in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Harry’s mother, Lily, sacrifices her own life to Voldemort in order to save Harry’s. After conquering Voldemort, Dumbledore expresses to Harry that “love as powerful as your mother's for you leaves its own mark" (Rowling 299). The devotion presented by Lily overpowers any evil that Voldemort could ever make present in Harry's life. In The Epic of Gilgamesh, before Gilgamesh embarks on his dangerous expedition, he seeks guidance from his mother, Queen Ninsun. The Queen graciously accepts Gilgamesh’s plead for assistance, for she agrees to ask the Sun-God to “watch over him day and night” (Gaster 7). Queen Ninsun gives Gilgamesh a push in the right direction, allowing him to overcome the obstacles that are inevitably placed in his path throughout his adventure. The love provided by Lily Potter and Queen Ninsun protects the cherished heroes during their perilous journeys.
The love that Lily had for Harry helped him survive Voldemort's attack.
